Smelling again the Bamboo Leaf Dump

After work, I was walking around the bank of my campus lake while pleasant breezes constantly and softly touched my face and brought me a sort of mellow smell of cooked bamboo leaves. “ Oh, today is the dragon boat festival and it is the high time to have bamboo-leaf dumpling now!” *A strong impulse suddenly arose in my mind.

Ever since the beginning of my university study, I left my hometown and had more than four-decade’s immigration life in different cities. I had such experiences as to try lots of bamboo-leaf dumplings, known as “Zong” or “Zhong Zi” in Chinese.

They all characterized by various local styles, for instance, “Jiaxing Zong Zi” made in Jiaxing, is famous in all over the China, especially in Su Zhou and

Shanghai area. Its main composition is the mixture of sticky rice(also known as glutinous rice), bacon and other ingredients. Fold the bamboo leaves as a funnel form, and fill with the mixture; then bend back the leaf ends to cover the funnel top and firmly tie up the assembly with twine. The Jiaxing Zong Zi looks like a small pyramid but with triangular face in each side.

Full of delightful bacon aroma, plus soft, tough and sticky feeling in your mouth, the taste of Jiaxing Zong Zi is really unforgettable.

The famous Cantonese “Zong Zi”--known as “Zhao Qing Zong”, however, is far more complicated than the previous one. It is covered with banana leaf and classified by sweet and salt taste. The ingredients of sweet “Zhao Qing Zong” include sticky rice, rock candy, red dates, medlar pulp and with sweet bean paste inside. The ingredients of the salt one mainly include sticky rice, chicken or ham. The shape of the “Zhao Qing Zong” is standard pyramid with rectangular base.
No matter in sweet or salt Zong Zi, the sticky rice is mixed with a small amount of edible alkali. After long-time slow cooking, the rice completely melts together and becomes a jelly-like solid with dark brown color. After such process, the Zong Zi tastes rather elastic with a special flavor.

The Zong Zi in our hometown isn’t as tasty as above-mentioned brands. Therefore, it remains a local food rather than a well-known genre. However, its packing technology is far more practical and convenient than anyone else.

It is very tiresome to unpack those brand products. Some tools, such as knife or scissors is absolutely necessary for twine cutting. In this case, a great packing advantage is outstandingly presented in my hometown Zong Zi.

Our Zong Zi is tied up by a piece of ripped palm leaf,文山區翻譯社, known as Zong Sha (the thread for Zong Zi tieing). The Zong Sha is much longer than previous twine. It has been firmly set around the little pyramid, since the tightness is a top quality to affect Zong Zi’s taste. Besides, with one end out, the two ends of the Zong Sha were deliberately buried beneath the bamboo leaves before. Therefore, the final tightening is nothing but to tauten the out end of the Zong Sha.

The unpacking method is also very convenient, just a simple pull to the out end in the opposite direction to the tightening without any assistant tool.

Another use of the out end is to joint the Zong Zi together. Local people always joint five or 10 Zong Zis together and bring them, as festival gift, to send friends or relatives nearby. Some children, with king’s yellow (arsenic sulphide) on their noses and cheeks, even fancy to wear a tiny Zong Zi necklace as festival decoration.

Today, I stay in this alien city alone and smell such familiar air with bamboo leaf aroma, how couldn’t I stop my mind’s soaring and nostalgia surging?

She came, she clucked, she conquered our NewYork City backyard

By William Grimes

From New York Times

One day in the dead of winter, I looked out my back window and saw a chicken. It was jet-black with a crimson wattle, and it seemed unaware that it was in New York City. In classic barnyard fashion, it was scratching, pecking and clucking.

How it came to a small backyard in Astoria, Queens, remains a matter of conjecture. The chicken made its first appearance next door, at the home of a multitude of cabdrivers from Bangladesh. My wife, Nancy, and I figured they had bought the chicken and were fattening it for a feast. That hypothesis fell into doubt when the chicken hopped the fence and began pacing the perimeter of our yard with a proprietary air.

Eating it was out of the question. As a restaurant critic and an animal lover, I subscribe to a policy of complete hypocrisy. Serve fish or fowl to me, but don’t ask me to watch the killing. Once I meet it, I don’t want to eat it.

Nancy and I next theorized that the chicken had escaped from a live-poultry market about four blocks away and was on the run. Our hearts went out to the brave little refugee. We had to save it.

Chickens were beginning to sound like the ideal pet. The chicken took to its new surroundings easily. Its main social task was to integrate into the cat society—a group of about five strays we feed.

How would the two species deal with each other?

One morning I looked out the window and saw four cats lined up at their food bowls, and, right in the middle, eating cat food with gusto, was the chicken. Occasionally it would push a cat aside to get a better position. The cats, for their part, regarded the chicken warily. To the extent that it was a bird, it was prey. But big prey. From time to time they would

stalk, press their bodies to the ground, swish their tails and give every sign of going for the kill. Then they would register the chicken’s size and become gripped by second thoughts. A face-saving, halfhearted lunge would follow.

The two sides soon achieved parity. Sometimes, I’d look out back and see a cat chasing the chicken. Ten minutes later I’d see the chicken chasing a cat. I like to think they reached the plane of mutual respect. Perhaps affection.

Although it was nice to know the chicken could eat anything, cat food didn’t seem right. I called my mother. Mom drove to the local feed store in La Porte, Texas, and picked up a

25-pound bag of scratch grains, a blend of milo, corn and oats. She began shipping the grain in installments. The chicken seemed to appreciate the feed.

Our care paid off. One morning, Nancy spied an egg on the patio. At the base of the pine tree, where the chicken slept, was a nest containing four more eggs. They were small, somewhere between ecru and beige, but this was it. The blessed event. After I wrote about the chicken in the New York Times, my mail-bag was bursting with letters offering advice on the proper care and feeding of chickens. Disturbed that she did not have a name, fans wrote with suggestions.

Vivian had a certain sultry appeal; Henrietta seemed cute. But Henny Penny? The media jumped in. National Public Radio quizzed me about the chicken for one of its weekend programs. “My producer wants to know, could you hold the telephone up to the chicken so we can hear it?” the interviewer asked. Unfortunately, I don’t have a 100-foot cord on my telephone. The

Associated Press sent a photographer to capture the chicken’s many moods.

(She had two.)

Then one morning I looked out my kitchen window, and my heart stopped. No chicken—not in my pine tree or the tree next door. Nor was she pecking and scratching in any of the nearby yards. There were no signs of violence, only a single black feather near the back door.

She was definitely missing. But why?

Spring was in the air. Could she be looking for love? Or perhaps she was reacting badly to the burdens of celebrity? Or maybe she was simply looking for a place to lay her eggs in peace.

William Grimes

The Love in That Summer

She enjoyed Strauss, KFC and Brazil Espresso, I know, she was like a busy bee in an office building in a decent grey dress suite. That was the case before she met me and all this has vanished since she fell in love with me.

Let me date back to 1997. I started my socalled business and she followed me without any reservation. That summer came very early and the flowers made a red city. We lived in a small suburb house, which was an illegal construction, with wind blowing through four sides into the house. That made our temporary home.

Just for saving money, we walked to our downtown store in the mooring, ate very simple lunch just worth 1.5 Yuan for each, and walked back home in the evening, thus we felt totally exhausted every day. We seemed to live through one whole year in such situation.

We tasted hardships and sorrows in those days,現場口譯.At that time, the business was my totem, while the love was her belief. These were all on which we could rely to go ahead.

One day, we walked home very late. She sat at the bed edge and washed her feet. I went to the landlord for boiled water to make instant noodles. When I came back with a thermos bottle, I found that she had fallen into a sound sleep. She kept a pose of being totally exhausted with her feet dunked in the basin. One of her arms was under her body, thus a light snore could be heard. I tiptoed to the bed with the intention of flipping her over to make her more comfortable. I gazed at her face, a young and pretty one which was filled with tiredness. On this pretty face, I found a mosquito.

That summer, the city was like a huge steamer box. We put off the time of buying a mosquito net one day after another just for saving money. I knew mosquitoes flew everywhere in our room, but it seemed nothing to me. So exhausted when lying on the bed, I doubted whether I would wake up even if someone cut a piece off my body, let alone mosquitoes bit me.

The mosquito lay on her forehead and sucked her blood greedily. She was sleeping like a baby and feeling nothing at all. Perhaps she was dreaming of our business turning better. There came a sudden throb in my heart. I reached my hands and waved, but the mosquito cared nothing about my threat. With the intention of patting it to death, I raised my hand high, but could not bear to pat down. I was afraid of waking her up -- because she was so worn out.

Between her and me, a puny mosquito was harming her at the moment. I stood there woodenly with my hand in the air. I fell into conflict and worry. Suddenly, I began to detest myself deeply. On that summer night, I stood there with an extremely guilty feeling for her and our love. After the mosquito flew away, I forgave it, but I could not forgive myself.

When I passed by a peddler‘s stall one day, I found a pink mosquito net priced at 16 Yuan. Many things could be done with the money at that time. Then I stayed up the whole night, waving a hardboard to keep mosquitoes from approaching her just like a guard. I acted as her temporary mosquito net. After a while, she woke up and gazed at me. Ten minutes later, tears flooded her face.

The next day a pink mosquito net hung in my room. We just kept silent when hanging it on our bed. I gave it to her as a gift, but I did not tell her my intention. I felt it was like a full-blown rose which could be regarded as my compensation for the love. But I thought that nothing could really make it up. That day was also her birthday.

Still later, there was a period of time, I got or we got 160,000 Yuan. We bought a lot of things, but we never bought a mosquito net. We did not need mosquito net any more, because no mosquito could fly into our well-decorated room. However, I always feel that all my money and belongings are far less valuable than the 16-yuan mosquito net to her or to our love.

That summer was gone. We could do nothing but love each other.
